St. Paul and All That

By Frank O’Hara
﹏﹏ ﹏﹏ ﹏﹏ ﹏﹏ ﹏﹏ ﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏

Totally abashed and smiling
I walk in
sit down and
face the frigidaire
it’s April
no May
it’s May

such little things have to be established in the morning
after the big things of night
do you want me to come? when
I think of all the things I’ve been thinking of
I feel insane
simply “life in Birmingham is hell”
simply “you will miss me
but that’s good”
when the tears of a whole generation are assembled
they will only fill a coffee cup
just because they evaporate
doesn’t mean life has heat
“this various dream of living”
I am alive with you
full of anxious pleasures and pleasurable anxiety
hardness and softness
listening while you talk and talking while you read
I read what you read
you do not read what I read
which is right, I am the one with the curiosity
you read for some mysterious reason
I read simply because I am a writer
the sun doesn’t necessarily set, sometimes is just
disappears
when you’re not here someone walks in
and says “hey,
there’s no dancer in that bed”
O the Polish summers! those drafts!
those black and white teeth!
you never come when you say you’ll come but on the
other hand you do come

The Clod and the Pebble

From Songs of Innocence and Experience
By William Blake
﹏﹏ ﹏﹏ ﹏﹏ ﹏﹏ ﹏﹏ ﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏

"Love seeketh not itself to please,
Nor for itself hath any care,
But for another gives its ease,
And builds a Heaven in Hell's despair."

So sung a little Clod of Clay
Trodden with the cattle's feet,
But a Pebble of the brook
Warbled out these metres meet:

"Love seeketh only self to please,
To bind another to its delight,
Joys in another's loss of ease,
And builds a Hell in Heaven's despite."

a toast to Qn Elizabeth

By Mary Stapp
﹏﹏ ﹏﹏ ﹏﹏ ﹏﹏ ﹏﹏ ﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏

This toast is a little sideways in that it’s my prediction for Adare and Jack

Many of you know that Krisse have been besties since 7th grade when we worked in the library together with Robert Byrd whose assigned shelves we would mess up so he had more work to do!

Hanging around the Pasternack household I got to know the storied family well enough to know not to be there when it was Krisse’s turn to do the dishes.

The seven beautiful sisters were a marvel - both then and now.

As they grew up and had their own families I noticed that they have more in common than just beauty.

All seven girls - AND ALL OF THEIR daughters - are the best mothers I know. You will never find better mothers. They are fierce in the love, protection, guidance, AND discipline they provide their children.

Katherine is such a great mom that when her children grew up, she began mothering peacocks! Wherever Karen and Tom are, you will find their kids close by. When I give shampoo to Krisse, it goes straight to Vaughn! And Krisse can diagnose a cough from next door.

And I think we all know where it comes from, but I want to spell it out anyway.

All of these fabulous moms learned at the feet of the master, the mother of all these mothers, Mrs. P!  She is SO strong and So loving. I have always been in awe of her.

So with apologies to The King, I would like to toast The Queen - Queen Elizabeth!!
